How do I put a deposit on a puppy?
Once the puppies are born, I’ll be accepting deposits of 50% of the purchase price with the other 50% due upon delivery. Total cost for a pup is $2500 CAD, so the deposit would be $1250.
What is included in the purchase price?
First vet check/vaccinations, microchip, deworming, DNA testing.
What can I expect from a Coolie?
Each dog has its own personality however here are some traits you can look forward to. A Coolie is a dog that:
- loves to hike and go on adventures with their pack leader (you!)
- is happy to be socialized with a family group
- is thrilled to be trained to agility, flyball, or other sports
- is happy to cuddle up at night
- is smart, biddable, and balanced
- can chill out
Can I meet a Coolie first before buying?
I would prefer you meet and experience a Coolie before making a commitment. During the week is perfect for a visit to Killara Station. (www.killarastation.com) Weekends here are CRAZY, but not impossible. You can meet my assortment of Coolies and get a sense of the kind of dog you can expect.
Do Coolies have any health issues?
On the net people say Coolies are free from health issues but that is incorrect. All dogs may have some health issues however it isn’t common for Coolies to have serious issues. Many health issues can be determined by the DNA testing which will happen with all these pups. Degenerative myelopathy, cataracts, cerebellum ataxia (no test as yet) can occur in many dogs and dog breeds. All we can do as breeders is choose the healthiest, most well-balanced, best structured dogs we can. I am very pleased with my dogs’ genetic results and am happy to share that information if you like.
What is your breeding cycle?
My girls have at least a year or two “off” between litters. I have two breeding females at home and two out with a trainer. I have two males. I only breed solid to Merle or solid to solid.
Are the puppies socialized?
This is a working farm as well as a doggie day-care/kennel facility. All my dogs and puppies are socialized daily with human visitors and, once old enough, canine companions. The puppies see many people of all ages basically from birth. They are raised in our farmhouse.
Can you ship a puppy?
Most people do pick up their puppy here at the farm but I have shipped pups all over the world. When you live overseas it’s easier to pop them on a plane.
Do you do any genetic testing on sires and dam or OFAs?
Yes. All my dogs are DNA tested with Embark. I haven’t X-rayed all the dogs for hips and shoulders however Kinga has been done. I co-own her with Katherine Ferger and she competes. We felt it important to have X-rays for comparison. There are no concerns with any of my bloodlines however I am working towards having them all tested.
How many litters a year do you have?
Approximately 1 per year
I have 3 breeding females and 2 studs
Do you use “puppy culture” while raising your pups?
Before puppy culture, I did puppy culture. I wish I made a video and program! 🙂
Do you use any techniques/methods with the puppies or start any training?
We do as much as we can including socializing and basic manners.
What do you feed them prior to going to new homes?
I feed them Puppy NOW! For years I was a raw feeder but unfortunately when we moved to Canada I had issues getting a balance raw diet for them. I completely respect raw feeders and would still do it if it was easier.
At what age do they go to new homes?
Some people want their pups as soon as 8 weeks which is fine with me. I would prefer 9-10 weeks.
How do you match puppies with new owners?
I like to work with new families to find the right match for them. I ask for your wish list, temperament, structure, sex, with colour being last.
Do buyers pick right at birth, or do you wait until they are older and some personality has come out?
Personalities are pretty easy to see after 5 weeks old however in my experience it is only a guide. I have seen Coolies as puppies appear to be “watchers”: quiet, calm pups who then turn into high drive crazy agility dogs. I’ve heard it said by a breeder of Coolies for generations for some pups it may take 1-2 years for their working ability to show. I haven’t seen that in any of my pups but I have seen the “watcher pup” that turns out as an amazing worker. It’s like they watched everyone make mistakes then they go out and do the job perfectly. It’s crazy!
